Hardtail Party Reviews The Starling Cycles Roost

starling cycles roost hardtail party review thumbnail

Hardtail aficionado Steve, AKA Hardtail Party, has had a Starling Cycles Roost hardtail on review for the last few months – and has just published his review.

The Roost is our stainless hardtail mountain bike frame. It’s designed to be a real all-rounder, for bombing tech or big and pedaly adventures. It’s built with super modern geo but isn’t too slack to be unwieldy. In short, it’s made to be super fun and super versatile. It’s exactly the kind of bike we want to ride. And, to be a little extra special, it’s made in beautiful, raw-look stainless steel.

And how did Hardtail Party feel about the Starling Roost? You’ll have to watch the review for yourself for the full story but (spoilers!) he REALLY liked it.

Here’s just a few of Steve’s comments from the review:

This thing corners like a dream!

Ooh – I like this thing. It is zippy. Wow, I’m surprised, it wants to kind of accelerate everywhere.

This bike is SO special. The guys at Starling really know how to tweak the geometry to get the most out of it. There’s so much special stuff going on here and there’s so much more going on here than it looks like on paper.

It’s for people with a little bit of ADHD and want to play and awaken the inner kid inside of them.

And just in case you missed it last year, Steve also published a First Look video of the Roost back when it first arrived at Hardtail Party HQ. It’s a great video to really dig down deep into the geometry of the Roost and get a feel for what the bike is all about.

Alex and Nikki’s Double Starling Review On The Radavist

We love getting our bikes featured on The Radavist… but how about when two get featured at once in a double-trouble, two-in-one feature? Now that’s something extra special!

The Starling Cycles Swoop is our super-versatile, steel mountain bike frame with 27.5″ wheels. It can be run in ‘Trail’ mode with 130mm travel or ‘Enduro’ mode with 160mm.

Switch the rear shock, adjust the shock mounts and you can jump back and forth between short-travel shredder and big-hitting, hard charger.

Partners Alex and Nikki both have Swoops of their own, one setup in Enduro and the other in Trail. With the unique situation of two riders on the same bikes in two different setups and both sharing the same adventures, The Radavist saw an opportunity for a double review.

No arguments here!

Aquarius Hut Trail System

Nikki “wants a bike that rides well, looks good, and tunes out all the jargon” whilst Alex is a self-confessed “giant bike nerd”.

Despite their differences, both riders were attracted to our bikes because they were tired of mainstream bikes ageing quickly and becoming outdated in just a couple of years. They wanted bikes that looked good, descended well and would last for ages – no quickly out-of-date standards or dated looks.

Their builds are pretty interesting – both set their bikes up for rough, rocky and technical US riding but also to be capable of big rides and some bike-packing adventures. There’s nothing obscenely featherweight, but, both opted to keep the weight down and the rolling speeds up – with John’s Swooping coming in around 32lbs, whilst still running a Fox 34 and 2.4″ tyres.

On the trail, Alex reckons they’re having a blast on their Swoops. His bike is setup with big travel 160/170mm and says:

“Fast downhills are a breeze. The bike goes where you want it to with ease and feels confident. Mine eats up chunk better than hers of course, but they still take it all in stride. They soak up all the chunky and rough corners and love flying into supportive berms and ruts and bouncing right back out”

Nikki is a little more matter-of-fact in her review and Alex reports that:

“Nikki said that going uphill the bike rides “normal” and it “goes up rocks well.” Downhill is “not sketchy.” I have to agree”

Of course, we don’t want to spoil the review by copying and pasting the whole thing here so, we’ll let you read it for yourself right here on The Radavist.

Our Custom Painted TJC Design Starling Twist

How cool is this custom-painted Starling Cycles Twist?

A few of you may have seen this one-off, never-to-be-repeated one-off already, we took it to a few events, races and shows last year. But it was never officially revealed and hasn’t appeared online anywhere… until now!

The idea was to create a real one-of-a-kind, eye-catching, head-turning bike that would show off exactly how custom our bikes can be and look GREAT at stuff like ArdRock.

We also saw a lot of custom-painted bikes in the early days of Starling and we thought it would be fun to bring them back – at least this once.

And so… the TJC Design custom Starling Cycles Twist was born.

The bike is a medium Starling Cycles Twist, our steel-framed mullet bike that can run either 135mm or 165mm.

It was built up with one of our made-in-Bristol, handmade frames and a selection of handpicked components. That includes a Cane Creek Helm fork, Cane Creek  InLine Coil shock, Michelin WildEnduro tyres, SQ Lab saddle, BikeYoke dropper and a whole load of beautiful and silver Hope Technology components.

The paintwork is completely custom and a total one-off, applied to the frame and fork and with the added detail of colour-matching the rear-shock’s spring.

We always really loved those early-2000s Rocky Mountain maple-leaf paint jobs and took some inspiration for this project but instead of Maple leaves, we have Starlings.

The custom paint job was designed by John at Breath.Design and made by TJC Design, here in Bristol who typically work on motorsports gear and specialised in graphic design, airbrushing and custom paintwork.

Want to own this bike for yourself?

If you’d like to own this bike, we’re selling the frame and forks. It’s a super limited edition, one-of-one, only one of its kind. Never to be repeated, nothing else like it. Price on enquiry.

Contact us if you’re interested in owning this special, one-off build for yourself.

Link to Starling Cycles Contact Page.

And Thanks to...

A huge thanks to TJC Design for their work on this special project. And to John at Breath.Design for his work on the design.

And a huge thanks to Cane Creek, Hope, Michelin, SQ Lab and BikeYoke for their support with this build.

And, of course, to Moor Beer in Bristol for the photo-shoot location.

Introducing Hâf Land - Starling's New Team rider

We love supporting talented riders here at Starling Cycles, and we’re proud to introduce our latest signing… Hâf Land.

Hâf (pronounced Harve, by the way) is an 18 year old enduro racer, from North Wales right here in the UK. She’s only been racing since 2022 but has already got a whole heap of really decent results in the bag, including a load of #1 spots at the UK’s Welsh Enduro Series.

Hâf will ride a Starling Twist this year racing the British Enduro Series, Welsh Enduro Series and maybe even a few Enduro World Cup events.

She came on board on Fleur’s recommendation (our long-standing sponsored rider) after they rode together in North Wales. If she gets the Fleur seal of approval, she’s good by us!

Hâf – via Starling – will be supported by Ohlins, Michelin, BikeYoke and TF Tuned. She’s also personally supported by DirtLej.

I was so happy to meet Hâf on her home trails last year. She's handy on a bike, interested in the world and doesn't take herself seriously. What a gal!

Getting to Know Hâf Land

Hey Haf, who are you? Tell us a little about yourself.

Hey! My name’s Hâf Land, I’m 18 and I’m an enduro rider from North wales.

What made you fall in love with riding bikes?

Biking has been a really good release for me, it’s my outlet from normal life and is very freeing.

I love the places riding takes me and the people I meet through it, riding is just my favourite thing in the world.

What’s your mountain bike origin story?

I got bitten by a radioactive bike and now here we are!!

I’ve been biking since I was really little, however, stopped riding as much in my early teens due to other interests (mainly horses 😬 ) before deciding that the path i was on wasnt the one for me, and from there gradually turned back to biking again because it was what i loved!

I bought myself my first mountain bike in 2020, it was a dark blue and pink Whyte 802 and it was my favourite thing ever. Looking back now I’m surprised I managed to ride what I did on a 120mm travel hardtail. Seeing how far I’ve come from then is really cool!

I then went on to save up and buy myself my first full-suspension bike and that bike changed it all for me and opened so many new doors.

And what do you love about riding a bike?

The freedom it gives me.

I feel like I can achieve anything on my bike, and the opportunities are endless.

What’s the plan for 2024?

This year I’m planning to race again in the British enduro Series, a few of the Welsh series and maybe some of the EDR opens, as well as a few trips away with friends! I am planning on going out to Finland for work for a few weeks in June and will take my bike with me then and go on a bit of an adventure

I’m also planning on heading to Molini again this year too.

What are you working on with your riding for 2024?

I think I’m always working on my riding and constantly want to feel like I’m progressing.

The biggest thing for me this year is to just enjoy it and have fun. I think people get so stuck in the cycle (no pun intended) of racing and training that they never stop to have fun, so this year is all about taking it in my stride, learning to accept that I won’t always have a ‘good day’ and that’s okay as long as I’m out having fun.

How’d the Starling thing come about?

I was out riding with some friends one day, and my boyfriend’s friends joined us, I hadn’t met them before but I had heard lots about them, and one of the friends was the lovely Fleur!

Fleur was telling me all about Starling and at the end of our ride she asked if I would mind if she passed on my information to the guys at Starling and now we are here!

Tell us about your Starling for 2024 – what are you riding, how’s it set up?

This year I’ll be onboard the Staring Twist, which is the mullet bike, I’m super stoked on the build and can’t wait to see what it can do between the tapes! I’m currently riding a loaner from Starling, by my proper race bike will turn up soon and I can’t wait.

That video shoot didn’t go entirely to plan – what happened there?!

So we headed out a few weeks ago with Noah to shoot a release video for my starling announcement. We came across a step-up and I decided to just pop off it first, rather than fully send it, just to get a feel for it. I landed, slipped out sideways and landed on a root – which snapped my break lever on a rock. Oops. Silly crash, but these things happen!

Off the bike – what are you into?

I love doing lots of different things, from silversmithing to going climbing with friends or wild swimming. I even went fell running again this week for the first time in what felt like forever… however, I can’t say I feel any urge to do that again anytime soon!

I just love being outside so as long as I’m busy doing something, I don’t mind what it is!

Hit shuffle on your Spotify/Apple music/iphone/generic mp3 player’s favourite playlist. What 5 songs come up?

This is my favourite question so far!

I LOVE music and listen to just about anything, but some of my all-time favourites have got to be these five!

  • Kiwi – Quarters of Change
  • Woman – Little Simz
  • Sawteeth – Spacey Jane
  • Bird Scooter – Krooked Kings
  • Travelling Alone – Tom the Mailman
